ZBee vs Pralana

Last reviewed: August 2026

Pralana is the power user's retirement engine — famous for the deepest tax modeling in the DIY category and for optimizers that hunt for the best Roth-conversion and claiming strategies. It earns its devotees, and it asks something of them: hand-entered data and a dense, hands-on interface. ZBee comes at retirement from the opposite end — a native Mac app that syncs your real brokerage holdings and measures one thing, the most you can safely spend, with every assumption disclosed. This comparison is really about how much configuring you want to do, and whether you want a recommendation or a measurement.

The one-line version: Pralana searches for your optimal strategy; ZBee measures what your actual accounts support.

Where Pralana does more

Being straight about this: Pralana's tax engine is the deepest in the category — full 1040-level, year by year — and its genuine Roth-conversion and Social Security optimizers search for an answer rather than just modeling one. Its historical sequence modeling is also advanced, in a hands-on way. If you enjoy detailed configuration and what you want most is an optimizer that tells you what to do, Pralana may fit you better — and that's a fine reason to pick it. (To Pralana's credit, its methodology is published too, in its dense, engineering-manual way.)

Where ZBee is different

Start with what the model is grounded in: Pralana has no account linking — its precision applies to figures you enter and maintain by hand. ZBee syncs every real position read-only from your brokerage at live prices, so the tax detail it does model (federal, state, IRMAA, NIIT, RMDs — shown, auditable) is computed against what you actually own today. Then what you get out: Pralana produces projections you interrogate; ZBee produces a spending number with this year's trim-and-raise trigger points in dollars, stress-tested automatically through every real market sequence since 1928. And ZBee is a native Mac app whose answer lives entirely on your machine — no cloud account, no spreadsheet upkeep.

The optimizer row is a genuine philosophical split, not a missing feature. ZBee measures what your current situation supports; it deliberately won't search for a restructuring, because an "optimal" conversion plan depends on estate goals, future tax law, and risk tolerance — things software can't know and a CPA or CFP is licensed to advise on. The full comparison covers this line-drawing in detail.
